When teeth are damaged beyond what a filling can restore, crowns are often required. Crowns are placed over a damaged tooth, completely covering the tooth and strengthening it. Before a crown can be placed on a tooth, the tooth must be made slightly smaller in all dimensions, so that when the crown is placed over the tooth the overall size of the crowned tooth remains the same. Crowns are held tightly to the tooth with dental cement, and aren’t intended to be removed. Crowns can be all gold, all porcelain, or a combination of porcelain over gold. Most people prefer the porcelain options because they can be made to look exactly like natural teeth. Crowns are an excellent restoration for a badly damaged tooth, but should be reserved forsituations where resin-fillings or lab-fabricated onlays won’t provide a good result. Just because a tooth has a crack line doesn’t necessarily mean it requires a crown.
Veneers are a lab-fabricated restoration that covers only the front surfaces of your teeth, usually the front teeth. They can be made any shade or shape, and are used to beautify smiles. Some veneers can even be made that are contact-lens thin, and don’t require any changes or modifications to your natural teeth.
